Approaches to Sociological Analysis Questions

I need an explanation for this Psychology question to help me study.

1. Discuss the strengths and limitations of positivist, interpretivist, and other approaches to sociological analysis.

2.What does it mean to be a “neighbor” in the cultural understandings of Americans? What has the pandemic shown us about just who is and is not our “neighbor?”

3.Topic: When F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “The rich are different than you and me,” Ernest Hemingway responded, “Yes, they have more money.” Is there a difference between a merely quantitative distinction and whatever Fitzgerald meant when he claimed the rich are “different”? Has the pandemic brought out any significant social-structural or qualitative differences between the rich and everyone else?

4. Topic: What has been the impact of the huge expansion of digital communications media? What has the pandemic revealed about the uses and abuses of these new methods of communication

PSY 120 GC Possible Advantages & Disadvantages to Online Therapy Discussion

I don’t understand this Psychology question and need help to study.

More and more people are seeking therapy online for the convenience it offers.

What are some possible advantages and disadvantages to online therapy? For example, how can clients verify the qualifications of the therapist?

How might the very nature of online therapy differ from an in-person setting in terms of the comfort level of the client? For example, would a shy person, or someone with agoraphobia be more likely to seek therapy online than in-person?

What else should we be doing to help reach folks who need support during this pandemic?

Eating Christmas in the Kalahari and the Balinese Cockfight Questions

I need an explanation for this Psychology question to help me study.

There are two ethnography articles this week. However, for the Balinese Cock Fight article, you only need to read the first two pages to answer the question. You should read all of “Eating Christmas in the Kalahari”

Eating Christmas in the Kalahari

1. What did the anthropologist “expect” to receive from his “gift”?

2. How was the gift initially “received” by the recipients? How did they actually react to the “gift”?

3. What social/cultural rationale was explained at the end of the article for why the recipients (The San people) reacted the way they did?

Balinese Cockfighting

4. What caused the author, Cifford Geertz, and his wife to start running away?

5. How did their actions help Geertz gain “rapport” with his studied culture?

LAVC Violent Behavior in Gaming Discussion

You will write a 6-7 page APA style research paper that summarizes research on any topic related to psychology. The paper should cite and reference at least 5 sources of information. You can only use sources from our library. This includes EBSCOhost and Library Catalog. Note that each source needs to be cited at least once and included in the References. The paper should be between 6 and 7 pages including the title page, abstract, literature review, conclusion, and references. You may choose any topic covered in the textbook to write about.

Be sure you use scholarly sources. If you choose, you may also use a few websites in addition to research articles. Some examples include: psychologicalscience.orgapa.org, NIMH.gov, NIDA.gov. To reiterate, this is in ADDITION to any research articles you obtained from the school’s library. So, you could review five journal articles in the Literature Review and then include a website you viewed. You can’t use any “.com” because there is no one to govern the truth of many of these sites. This means you can’t even use wikipedia.com or any other “wiki” site!

The important thing to remember here is NOT TO PLAGIARIZE the information. CITE your references in EVERY paragraph, and USE YOUR OWN WORDS! Please do not copy word for word from your sources unless you put those words in quotation marks.

You must summarize what you have read using plain English. Do not write scientific jargon (such as lists of prescription drugs or the ingredients of drugs) that is not understandable without a medical degree.

Please visit the LAVC Library website to search the online database: https://www.avc.edu/studentservices/library/

Notice there are several resources available to you here, such as searching for articles and tutorials. You can even ask a librarian if you are experiencing difficulties! If you live near campus, they can also assist you in person.

Please also review the writing resource provided by LAVC: http://www.lavc.edu/writingcenter/writing-resources/Tips-for-writing-essays.aspx

  • Title page: Title, running header, author, institution, and date. (5 points)
  • Abstract: Summarize the literature in 120 words or less. You should write this section last because it is a summary of the rest of the paper (5 points)
  • Introduction:
  1. Introduce the topic of your paper: describe the major concepts (ex. What is aggressive behavior, depression etc.) and mention some general knowledge supported by research.
  2. Propose a thesis (i.e. Viewing violent media causes aggressive behavior) and state how you will attempt to validate it (i.e. I will attempt to validate this claim by summarizing research related to violent TV and violent video games). (10 points)
  • Literature Review: Summarize research related to your topic: What have others written about the topic in scientific journals, books, websites, etc.? You should attempt to validate your thesis with the research you summarize. This is the major portion of your paper and should contain several paragraphs totaling about 2-3 pages. (15 points)
  • Conclusion: (A) Restate your thesis, and (B) briefly summarize why it is supported (mention the main points). (5 points)
  • References: list all sources used for the research paper in APA format. (10 points)

The presentation should consist of 3 points:

  • Overall, what did you learn about yourself in this class?
  • Choose one of the following topics and talk about how it applies to you:
    • Listening
      • If you choose listening, talk about what your listening challenges are. For example, do you use a particular type of nonlistening? Have you had people close to you tell you you need to work on your listening skills?
    • Defensiveness
      • If you choose defensiveness, what type of defense mechanisms do you catch yourself using? Have people around you told you that you are defensive?
    • Conflict
      • If you choose Conflict, what conflict style (or styles) do you use in particular situations? How have people around you described your approach to conflict?
  • What do you need to change about yourself in order to be a more effective communicator?

Organization

You should organize the presentation in the following way:

I Introduction

A Attention Getter

B Social Significance

C Thesis and Preview

II Body

A What I learned About Myself

B Specific Topic and how it applies to me (Listening, Conflict or Defensiveness)

C What I need to change about myself to be a more effective communicator

B Brief Summary

C tie back to the attention Getter

Purpose

These are the main goals of this assignment:

  • You will take a more in-depth look at a some communication topics from this class and specifically how they apply to your own life.
  • You will learn something about your strengths and challenges as a communicator, and hopefully make a plan to improve.
  • You will also develop and practice your public speaking skills. Since this course meets the Oral Communication requirement for the California State University System, you are each required to complete at least one assignment that gives you the opportunity to do some public speaking. This presentation gives you that opportunity.

PSY 120 Cuymaca College Drug Abuse Psychology Discussion

This is your comprehensive Final Exam. You must answer each question using your own words. If you are using evidence from the book or any other resource you must provide the correct citation. Please download the questions, answer on your own word document and upload by midnight on your assigned due date.

1. Briefly discuss the phenomenon of drug abuse in the context of five different psychological perspectives.
2. Describe the basic structure of a research experiment. Include the definition and purpose of the hypothesis, independent variable, dependent variable, control group, experimental group, and random assignment.
3. Explain what behavioral geneticists mean by the term heritability and why it is frequently misunderstood. Provide one example of low heritability and one example of high heritability.
4. Psychologists have described the human nervous system as the communication and control center for the body. The nervous system allows us to take in information from the environment, communicate the information to different parts of the body, and coordinate the body’s response. The nervous system itself is made up of neurons, or nerve cells, that communicate with each other by receiving and transmitting electrochemical signals, called neurotransmission. All human behavior is made possible by the activity of individual neurons working together in the nervous system. Think about a simple action you do every day, like answering your phone. When you perform this routine act, what are the individual neurons in your nervous system doing to make it possible?

In a multi-paragraph essay, explain how the activity of individual neurons enables you to perform a simple action like answering your phone. Be sure to describe the main parts of a neuron, explain the unique function of each part, and describe how neurons use electrochemical signals for neurotransmission. Include details from class materials, readings, and research on the nervous system to support your discussion.
5. Current research is revealing new relationships between sleep and memory formation. Discuss prior views and current research regarding the role of sleep. How might this apply to your own preparation for exams?
6. Psychologists have identified five main personality traits, often called the “Big Five” or the five-trait model. Think about the “Big Five” personality traits we studied in class. Then select a real or fictional character from literature, film, television, or public life. How could the “Big Five” model be used to understand the character’s personality? In a multi-paragraph essay, explain what is meant by a “personality trait” according to the “Big Five” model, define each of the “Big Five” traits, and describe the character’s personality using the “Big Five” traits. For each trait, be sure to provide evidence from the character’s thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Include details from class materials, readings, and research on personality to support your discussion.
7. Social psychologists like Solomon Asch have studied the conditions that affect how people act in group situations, especially the ways in which people conform to the attitudes and behavior of others. Drawing on your personal experience, think of a situation in which you either did or did not conform to the attitudes and behavior of others in a group. In a multi-paragraph essay, describe the situation and discuss the factors that influenced you to conform or not conform. Be sure to include information from class materials, readings, and research on group conformity to support your discussion.
8. Describe the controversy over whether routine vaccinations in children cause autism. What is the current interpretation of the scientific evidence? What has been a consequence of parental concerns about a potential link between routine vaccinations and autism?
9. For centuries, people have believed myths and misconceptions about psychological disorders and the people who suffer from them. Modern psychological research has allowed us to correct some of these misconceptions. As a result, many people have changed their ideas about mental and emotional disorders. Think of a common misconception you have observed in society or in your personal experience. How could information from research be used to change people’s views of psychological disorders? How can this information help us to better understand people who experience mental and emotional disorders? In a multi-paragraph essay, describe the misconception you observed and discuss how information from research could be used to change this misconception about psychological disorders and the people who suffer from them. Be sure to include details from class materials, readings, and research on psychological disorders to support your discussion.
10. Imagine that you are an experienced mental health professional. Choose a psychological disorder and describe the type of treatment plan that you would initiate for such a disorder. Describe how you would modify your treatment plan for certain patients, if they do not respond well to your typical treatment paradigm.
11. Give an example of a highly stressful circumstance that you have experienced (or you may create a fictitious scenario) and discuss the various physiological changes that would occur at each stage of Selye’s general adaptation syndrome as a result of that event.

PSYCH 8340 Capella University Forensic Evaluation Draft Paper

I don’t understand this Psychology question and need help to study.

The purpose of this assignment is to create a rough draft of the forensic evaluation that you selected in u05a1 from the following four options:

  • Competency to confess (waive Miranda rights).
  • Sanity at the time of the offense charged (insanity).
  • Independent medical evaluation (IME) for psychological damages.
  • Juvenile court evaluation for amenability to treatment.

INSTRUCTIONS:

For this assignment, you will begin to complete an outline of key components of a forensic evaluation, which will be further completed in u09a1. In this initial draft of your forensic evaluation, include the following components (a forensic evaluation generally has all of these elements, although some evaluators may provide more background information on the evaluee than others—many examples of forensic evaluations are provided in Chapter 19 of your Melton textbook):

  1. Introduction
    • Explain the legal question being asked.
    • Invent a fictional client to be evaluated and describe all relevant characteristics of this evaluee (evaluee name, gender and age).
  2. Informed Consent
    • Include a paragraph explaining what you would tell the evaluee about the nature and purpose of the evaluation, including any limitations to confidentiality and release of information.
  3. Interview Questions
    • Based on the particular type of evaluation you selected, include a section describing the questions related to the referral question that you plan to ask your evaluee.
  4. Collateral Information
    • Include other third-party information relevant to the legal question being asked that you would obtain.
  5. Test Battery
    • Justify the appropriateness of two instruments that you would administer for the type of evaluation you are conducting.

Use the Sample Forensic Evaluation (linked in Resources) to assist in formatting your evaluation. Note that your forensic evaluation does not require this level of detail in the background history.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • In addition to the above objectives, your assignment should meet the following requirements:
  • Written communications are free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • Formatting: current edition APA style and format.
  • Length of paper: 6–8 pages.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

Rasmussen College Bias and The Practical DSM 5 Diagnostic Process Discussion

Because we’re focused on the DSM-5 process itself in this module, you may cite any of the assigned readings, including the DSM-5 and DSM-5 handbooks.

1. For most disorders, the DSM-5 describes prevalence according to gender. There are frequently differences which may even give diagnostic clues according to the DSM. Caplan et al. argue that gender bias is a major factor that leads to increased diagnosis of depression in women. Biological psychiatrists will generally acknowledge that gender bias does exist but that biology also holds an important role, for instance citing research showing brain differences between males and females during gestation (Links to an external site.), before socialization has taken place. There are also differences in disease prevalence in physical medical disease; women are more likely to be diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, men are more likely to have heart attacks. In mental health, men are more likely to be diagnosed with Schizophrenia or Anti-Social Personality Disorder.

Examine the DSM-5 category of Major Depressive Disorder:

Screen Shot 2021-01-15 at 8.11.03 AM.png

Do you see clear gender bias embedded into the category by the creators of the disorder? In practice, what should a practicing social worker do to avoid making gender-biased diagnostic decisions?

2. It should be clear by now that the DSM-5 is a very flawed human endeavor. However, DSM-5 included the Cultural Formulation Interview, which attempts to capture the cultural influences on the manifestation of psychopathology, as well as other important issues relevant to ongoing treatment. Please examine the CFI in your DSM-5. Again, consider the diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder as posted above. Also consider your own life experiences (including but not limited to clinical experience) regarding the role of culture in depression, human distress, and ‘happiness’. Assuming the questions on the CFI are asked to a client suspected of manifesting Major Depressive Disorder, how might this affect the overall DSM diagnosis? What important factors does the DSM-5 diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder miss that might be captured by the CFI? Does the CFI solve the problem presented by using DSM-5 criteria for depression created largely by relatively wealthy white male psychiatrists?

3. Please select at least one of your classmates’ response to the above question to comment on. As part of your response please express respectfully your agreement or disagreement with your colleague’s position and explain why.

The in-group discussion board closes at 11:59 PM EST on Thursday, January 28th. I realize that some are in other time zones, but I cannot alter the time for individual students- please plan accordingly.

Please note that the discussion board is now graded. Please take any feedback you received on Module 1 to heart, especially any suggestions given by your Online Mentor regarding full engagement with the material presented, proofreading, following the instructions, and otherwise.

Please also ensure that you are fully conversant with the instructions for discussion board posts specific to this course before starting this assignment.

Please note that for this and each discussion board assignment in this course, your individual post is due by the Thursday midnight before the Sunday midnight deadline (if you post on Friday or Saturday you receive a -10% penalty, and if you post on Sunday you receive a -25% penalty; posting after the Sunday midnight deadline results in a maximum possible score of 60% for the assignment). You must make at least one comment on a fellow group member’s post by no later than Saturday midnight. Commenting only on the Sunday, or failing to comment at all before the Sunday midnight deadline will result in 0 points for commenting (i.e. a penalty of -1).

  • Compose your response in Microsoft Word, formatted per APA style, and save it to your computer. Copy and paste your response into the discussion board forum for this assignment. Attach the Word document to your post before you save it to the forum in Canvas.
  • Your post, not counting the reference section, needs to be a minimum of one and a half pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font, with one inch margins all round, and no additional before or after paragraph spacing (requires changing the default settings in Word). Points will be deducted if you do not write enough. You may add a cover page to the Word document that you attach to your post, but do not put the cover page onto your post in the forum.
  • Copying from another student’s post, even their reference section, counts as plagiarism, as does copying from books, articles, or websites without the proper punctuation and citation to indicate that it is a direct quote from a specific source. Avoid using direct quotes, but if you do use a direct quote, it must be no longer than one and a half lines, and a maximum of one direct quote per post is permitted. Direct quotes are discouraged. Use your own words and cite the source of your information properly.

Capella University Multicultural Considerations When Working With Children Paper

I need support with this Psychology question so I can learn better.

1) Diversity

Explore how the racial and ethnic composition of youth in the United States is changing. Include the following in your post:

  • Identify the implications of growing racial and ethnic diversity in America.
  • Analyze how you will ensure that, as a leader and advocate in the human behavior field, you are multiculturally competent and prepared to work with diverse youth.
  • Examine various ways you can increase your multicultural competence.

Review the Eagly and Chin (2010) article on leadership and diversity. Then, complete the following:

  • Answer how many cultural groups you identify with as an adult.
  • Analyze the cultural groups that were meaningful to you as a child. Did these change over time?
  • Analyze how your own cultural identity, past and present, will help you to become an effective leader in the human behavior field.
  • Provide validation and support for assertions by including relevant examples and supporting evidence.

Walden University Week 7 Chronic Childhood Illnesses Discussion

Young patients face unique challenges during an illness and its treatment. Chronic childhood illness can be extremely disruptive for the child or adolescent and his or her family, especially when treatment demands frequent and lengthy hospitalizations. The illness, as well as a lack of normalcy in the patient’s life, may hinder biological, psychological, and social development. The primary role of medical social workers working with children or adolescents is to help the patient and family live as normal a life as possible in the face of illness.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Think about chronic illnesses that may affect children and adolescents. Select one chronic illness and consider how it impacts the patient and the family. How might the illness affect the child’s growth and development?

BY DAY 3

Post a brief description of the illness and its overall impact on the well-being of a young patient and his or her family. Explain how the illness may disrupt or influence the biological, psychological, and social growth and development of the child or adolescent. Identify at least three primary stressors (e.g., complications, hospitalization) related to the illness. Select one of the stressors that you think is critical. Justify your selection. Analyze possible pediatric social work interventions that might be applied to address the stressor.

  5. title page and reference page does not count in 2 pages

America Public University System Language and Cognitive Learning Periods Paper

Chomsky’s Theory of Language Development discusses “critical periods” for learning language. Following from this theory, disruptions during critical periods should negatively affect the development of language.

Please view either this video about the historic case of Genie or this source about the same case.

Other resources about feral children are in this week’s reading list.

Obviously, these are horrific cases of child abuse.

  1. What do the case of Genie and your readings tell us about language (and emotional) development?
  2. What cues can educators take from these tragic cases?

Colorado State University What Is Social Comparison Theory Essay

I’m trying to study for my Psychology course and I need some help to understand this question.

Imagine that you have just received 75% on a test in a class that you care about a lot. You don’t have the entire distribution or even the mean for the class, and you won’t be able to ask the professor for them until after the weekend is over. You will, however, have the chance to ask some of your friends or acquaintances in the class about their scores. 1) Who will you ask and why? 2) What if you don’t care about the class? Who, if anyone, will you choose? 3) What is social comparison theory? 4) What are the conditions under which people will care about making social comparisons, and what are the conditions under which they won’t care? 5) What are the conditions under which people will tend to make upward comparisons, downward comparisons, and comparisons to similar others? 6) Provide personal examples of times that you made an upward comparison, a downward comparison, and a comparison to similar others. Your examples cannot involve class grades. (approximately 2 pages, typed and double spaced, not including references)

Identify who you will ask about their scores on the test amd discuss why you choose those and not others.

Would you have the same behavior of comparison if you did not care about the class? Would you still ask others about their scores? Is so, who would you ask and why?

Describe social comparison theory an dunder what conditions people will care about comparisons.
