Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) (along with Titian), lived a long, prolific life through both the High (1495-1520) and Late (1520-1600) Renaissance. We can see how his earlier style was characteristic of the High Renaissance, and his later style more characteristic of the Late Renaissance, and even influenced by Mannerism.
Include in your Brief Writing Assignment the following points:
- Using the frescos of the Sistine Chapel as a point of comparison, how did the human figures on the ceiling of the chapel (painted from 1508-1512) compare to the human figures of the Last Judgment painted on the altar wall (from 1534-1541)? Consider their proportions, poses, and arrangements and anything else you wish.
- How do the differences between the ceiling and altar wall figures reflect the tendencies of the High Renaissance and Late Renaissance (and/or Mannerism), respectively?
- Be sure to include at least two or more specific figures to illustrate your points. (Specify which figures you are comparing either by describing them visually, or by an actual proper name they have been given). Compare them by their physical characteristics as mentioned in #1.
- Besides the literal physical differences between the High and Late Renaissance figure styles, what may have changed historically, and in Michelangelo’s life that may have contributed to his different approaches in painting the ceiling vs. the altar wall?*
*You may need to use a source besides Janson (especially for #4. related to Michelangelo’s life), just please BE SURE TO CITE YOUR SOURCES! You will lose significant points for NOT doing so. Thank you!
